Melrose Park is a village in Illinois and is part of Cook County. The Melrose Park population is 21,853 people as of 2010. The population has decreased slightly since the year 2000, but the “Corporate King of the Suburbs” has only added more attractions to the area. Mayor Ronald M. Serpico's calls Melrose Park a village where families are still close to one another and where church is a central part of a family’s day. This is also a culturally significant area, and it has a diverse population of all ethnicities.
What is there to know about Melrose Park? It is the home to a few theme parks that are friendly to younger visitors. There are also public and private schools in the area as well as a host of restaurants and hotels. It is certainly a place that caters to families. In fact 71.4% of the entire population is part of a family unit.
The village got its start in 1882. The population quickly grew, then slowed, then grew again following the First World War. After WWI, the local economy recovered when numerous manufacturing companies set up shop. The fact that the Proviso freight yards were in the area also helped the village’s economy down until the modern age. Ever since the 1990s, more effort has been made to turn the village into a tourist attraction.
First, street signs were redesigned. Then, officials dug up the wooded area on Silver Creek and replaced the grass. Streets were also repaved and the athletic field was renovated. These remodeling plans have helped to improve real estate in the area. The population of Melrose Park remains very down-to-earth and neighborly. Attractions like the Kiddieland Amusement Park and the Maywood Park Racetrack are brining in thousands of tourists a year. Come see the culture of this village and experience its suburban paradise!
